TO BE FRANK

This image shows my father as a young
man. It is from a photograph taken shortly
after he and my mother were married. The
title is a pun because his first name was
Frank. To be frank means to be truthful. To
be truthful is to speak from the heart. The
man projects forward from the place of the
heart on the large gray suit that forms the
background. But it also asks who we are. Are
we the background suit or the foreground
figure or both? And what do we have in our
pocket and whom do we have in our heart?
