The only truly fair game is the game you play
against yourself. You are your own perfectly
matched opponent. In this work, two women
play chess while one woman looks on, but to
me, they are all aspects of one person. The
oldest woman is winning, showing triumph at
the end of a long life. As three women, they
form the archetype of the Triple Goddess.
Comprised of the maiden, the mother, and the
crone, it is a symbol of transformation.
